Benzene Linked to Leukemia

Leukemia originates in a cell in the bone marrow and is characterized by un- controlled growth of marrow cells. According to the NIH, there are more than 80,000 leukemia or lymphoma deaths in the United States each year.
It has been known for a long time that Benzene has caused cancer. This dates back to the early 1900's when the first strong connections were made. Benzene has been scientifically linked to several diseases particularly the following:
- Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML - 10,000 new cases annually)
- Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL)
- Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML)
- Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL - about 8,100 new cases each year)
- Hairy Cell leukemia (HCL)
- Non- Hodgkin's Lymphoma
The diseases result from an acquired (not inherited) genetic injury to the DNA of a single cell, which becomes abnormal (malignant) and multiplies continuously. Their onset interferes with the body's production of healthy blood cells and can make the body unable to protect itself against infections. Leukemia is cancer of the blood-forming tissues, the bone marrow, lymph nodes and the spleen. It is one of 100 cancer diseases producing abnormal cells in large numbers.
The exposure levels that have been associated with cancer have ranged from from less than 5 years to people exposed for more than 30 years. These workers have died of rare forms of Leukemia. Long-term exposure may also adversely impact bone marrow and blood production.
