Relative Diagnosed: Yes - "My mother-in-law died in Jan, 1999 from AML. She lived in an area surrounded by mills and railroads. I just found out several days ago that Benzene is a leading cause of this type of leukemia. According to my husband, who also grew up in this same area, the mills were constantly dumping chemicals and waste products in the grounds surrounding their small community. What, if any, are our legal rights in this matter of possible exposure to Benzene? We currently have no documented proof that she had been exposed to Benzene or that is was the cause of her AML. How would we go about proving that Benzene exposure was responsible for her illness and death? What would we need to do for the future in the event that my husband, father-in-law, or daughter would also be diagnosed with a cancer that is caused by Benzene as they also had potentially been exposed?" - Kathy K, Beaver, PA.

Have you Been Diagnosed: Yes - "I lived at 922 18th Street North Columbus MS from 1961 until 1982 and from 1984-1986. The property is within the bounds of several on going Class Action Law Suits. The class action suits claim that plant workers used benzene, arsenic, and creosote (all classified by the EPA as probable carcinogens) to pressure-treat railroad ties, which were then left outside to dry. The rain and wind conditions caused the treated would to emit odors and toxins, contaminating air, soil, and groundwater." In the front of the house is an open ditch that water flowed on a regular basis. As a child I had Asthma and Pneumonia, which may have been related. In Mar of this year (2005) I was diagnosis with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). CLL is- a common type of indolent (slowly progressing) cancer in which too many lymphocytes (white blood cells) are found in the peripheral blood and bone marrow) Per my Doctor this is a chronic disease and if successful in putting the Cancer in to remission it is most likely to resurface." - David H. Relative Diagnosed: Yes -" My father died in 1997 from AML after being exposed to benzene products on the job in the metal crafts industry for over 40 years. Our discovery of the details was only in Dec. 2004, as we were never made aware of this benzene-leukemia link. I would like to know our family's legal options.
